New Product Review: Carestream CS 8200 3D NEO

Carestream Dental recently launched the Neo Edition of the CS 8200 3D Family; an evolution of the CS 8200 3D.

As with the original CS 8200 3D Family, the Neo Edition includes 2D panoramic imaging, CBCT imaging, 3D-object scanning, and optional cephalometric imaging.

Let’s take a look at what’s new, the impact of these advances on patient communication and diagnostic accuracy, and how the CS8200 3D compares to the industry-leading Carestream CS 9600.

New User Interface

Work faster, more accurately, and with fewer clicks

Carestream software has always been very highly regarded by dentists, but the new CS 8200 3D NEO comes equipped with software that is even easier to use, thanks to a new user interface that puts all settings one click away from the main screen.
Practitioners can now manage the entire exam set up on a single screen, including the selection of:

  • Procedure and program
  • FOV
  • Patient morphotype
  • Resolution
  • Acquisition parameters
Impact on patient communication

The simplified interface frees up headspace for the practitioner to communicate with, and reassure, the patient while setting up the scan.

Impact on diagnostic accuracy

Knowing the specific question that you want your scan to answer is one of the most critical considerations when setting up a CBCT. Thanks to the updated user interface, it is now even easier to ensure the right scan parameters are set up prior to capture.

Low-dose Lateral Scout View

Never miss the mark.

Low-dose lateral scout view lets you perform a pre-acquisition routine to check you have the correct field of view and position before running the full 3D capture. This simple check-measure reduces the risk of mis-scanning, unnecessary exposure because of re-scanning, and those embarrassing "sorry, I didn't quite get that right" conversations.

Impact on patient communication

Lateral scout view can be a great communication tool; allowing you to demonstrate your thorough, methodical approach to their care.

Impact on diagnostic accuracy

Scout view can be a game changer for ensuring your scan is on track to give you the information you need for an accurate diagnosis. For dentists who are just starting out with 3D imaging in-house, or are new to it entirely, scout view lets you find the mark and find your feet without excess exposure for patients.

New Fields of View (FOV)

More versatility, lower doses

To extend the in-house applications of 3D CBCT, and to ensure minimum patient dose, the CS 8200 3D NEO expands upon the standard fields of view, with the new inclusion of:

  • 4 x 4 cm for all patient morphotypes, not just children
  • 5 x 8 cm for opposing teeth evaluation and single implant planning
  • 10 x 5 cm for single, full-arch scans on smaller patients
  • 10 x 10 cm for dual, full-arch scans on smaller patients

In addition to these new fields of view, high-resolution 75-micron scans are available for 4 x 4 cm to 8 x 9 cm, single and dual arch. This is a real asset in endodontic cases where precision is paramount.

Impact on patient communication

While most patients won’t care that your CBCT scanner has new fields of view, they will care about receiving the lowest reasonable dose and knowing that you are only scanning what you absolutely need to. Communicating your choices and reasoning to your patient can help them feel more comfortable with your process, diagnosis, and proposed management.

Impact on diagnostic accuracy

The new fields of view do offer improvements in diagnostic accuracy, but perhaps their most significant contribution is in treatment planning. Whether using high-resolution and a tight FOV for complex root canals, or managing occlusion in an orthodontics case, seeing exactly what you need to means fewer surprises in surgery.

Comparison:
Carestream CS 8200 3D NEO vs. CS 9600

The CS 8200 3D NEO is the new kid on the block, but it has been built upon the tried and tested, highly popular CS 8200. So, let’s take a look at how this new contender stacks up against the heavyweight champion of CBCT, and 3-time winner of the Cellerant best-in-class technology award, the Carestream CS 9600.

Who should use it?

The 8200 3D Neo is our pick for most New Zealand dental practices.

Its broad and practical FOV range, imaging accuracy, and ease-of-use are well-suited to the needs of dental generalists and specialists alike. Its smaller footprint, and price point, also make it very accessible.

The 9600 is a great choice for specialties, like Endodontics,

Its huge FOV range makes the CS 9600 a great choice for radiology centres, or hospitals where multiple disciplines are using facial/dental CBCT for case management.
